Certification – FAQs
Q: Do I need to be a licensed massage therapist to take the Thai Yoga Massage certification?
A: No. You do not need to be a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) to enroll in or complete our Thai Yoga Massage certification. This training is open to yoga teachers, energy workers, bodyworkers, and individuals interested in learning Thai Yoga Massage for personal use or as a complementary modality.
Q: Can I practice Thai Yoga Massage as a paid practitioner after completing the certification?
A: This depends on how you use the practice and your professional credentials. In Ohio, hands-on massage therapy offered to the general public for compensation typically requires a state massage therapy license. Our Thai Yoga Massage certification does not qualify or license you as a massage therapist and does not replace state licensure requirements.
Q: How is Thai Yoga Massage different from licensed massage therapy?
A: Thai Yoga Massage, as taught in this certification, is considered an energy-based, movement-focused practice. It is performed on fully clothed clients on a mat, without oils or lotions, and involves guided stretching, assisted yoga postures, compression, and energetic awareness. It is often described as “doing yoga to someone,” rather than manipulating soft tissue in the way licensed massage therapy does.
Q: How can I legally use this certification in Ohio?
A: This certification is intended for:
-
Personal practice
-
Educational use
-
Enhancing an existing scope of practice (such as yoga teaching, energy work, or holistic wellness services)
If you are already a licensed professional (such as an LMT), you may incorporate Thai Yoga Massage techniques into your existing practice within your licensed scope. If you are not licensed, Thai Yoga Massage should be offered only in ways that do not represent massage therapy or medical treatment.
Q: Does Level One qualify me to offer full Thai Yoga Massage sessions?
A: No. Level One is a foundation course that teaches approximately 60 poses (out of the traditional 108). While it provides a strong introduction, it does not offer sufficient depth to deliver a full Thai Yoga Massage session as a standalone service.
Q: When is Level Two recommended?
A: Level Two is strongly encouraged for students who:
-
Wish to learn the complete Thai Yoga Massage series
-
Want greater confidence, flow, and sequencing
-
Are licensed practitioners looking to more fully integrate Thai Yoga Massage into their professional offerings
-
Are yoga teachers and healers who want to skillfully and confidently integrate Thai Yoga Massage into classes, workshops, private sessions, or specialized offerings
Level Two builds on the foundation and supports deeper embodiment, technique, and practical application.
Q: Is this certification useful for yoga teachers?
A: Yes. This course is especially valuable for yoga teachers. Thai Yoga Massage deepens hands-on assisting skills, enhances understanding of anatomy and range of motion, and supports safe, intuitive touch. Many yoga teachers use this training to elevate private sessions, workshops, retreats, and specialty offerings while staying within an energetic, movement-based scope of practice.
Q: Will this certification allow me to call myself a “Thai Massage Therapist”?
A: No. This certification does not authorize the use of titles such as “massage therapist” unless you hold a valid state massage therapy license. Graduates may refer to themselves as having completed Thai Yoga Massage training or certification, consistent with Ohio regulations and ethical business practices.
Note: Laws and regulations vary by state and may change over time. We encourage students to consult the Ohio State Medical Board or a legal professional if they plan to offer paid services.
